Fire Response Management Structure

Integrated response by both WRFA and NZFS urban fire crews is the key to effective fire suppression management in the Wellington Rural Fire District

The initial response to vegetation fires lies with the WRFA Volunteer Rural Fire Forces (VRFF's), Greater Wellington and Department of Conservation fire crew in conjunction with the New Zealand Fire Service (NZFS) responding to 111 calls. The PRFO can automatically commit resources from across the district to any fire incident.

A large, multi-agency vegetation fire incident will be managed by a Regional Incident Management Team (RIMT) which can be augmented with access to the National Rural Fire Authority's National Incident Management Team resources:

National Rural Fire Authority NIMT Programme

Structural and vehicle fires within the WRFA District; although still the accountability of the WRFA, are operationally led by NZFS with back-up assistance provided by VRFF's, as NZFS have the appropriate training and experience to deal with such incidents.

All incidents, large or small are managed under the New Zealand Coordinated Incident Management System.
