Rachael Thorp Principal Rural Fire Officer
I left school and joined the NZ Army as an Electronics Instruments and Radar Technician. After completing a 9000hr apprenticeship I changed trades to a Communications Information Systems Operator. After 13 years in the Army I started work at Wellington City Council as Technical Manager and DPRFO and then onto DOC as the Technical Support Officer – Fire, Compliance and Law Enforcement and Boat Manager.
Part of Army life was that of a volunteer firefighter and having been posted to Trentham where there was no defence brigade joined the NZFS as a volunteer and also the Upper Hutt VRFF.
Over my time at Wellington City Council and DOC I have been on deployments to USA, Australia and various parts of NZ. I have also attended a fire behavior course in Canada and hold the role of Planning Manager on one of our National Incident Management Teams.

Previous employment has included Telecom, The Salvation Army, and most recently, Civil Defence. All of these roles have had a strong community focus in which I have always endeavoured to build strong relationships and draw on the strengths that exist within people.
I have lived in Wellington for 15 years and, with my family, love the many different experiences that the Wellington region has to offer.
